Congratulations to Chick-fil-A and Bowl President Gary Stokan on hosting another outstanding Kickoff Classic from the Georgia Dome. The game between Boise State and Georgia had a big time bowl atmosphere with great excitement and an electric college environment. Boise State was all that it was billed to be. QB Kellen Moore was even better than advertised. Doug Martin and D.J. Harper give Boise a strong combination of power and breakaway speed. Tight end Kyle Efaw along with a group of developing receivers gives Moore plenty of targets.
The O-line is strong and protected Moore for most of the night, while the Broncos defense was surprising good particularly up front and seemed to pick up where they left off last season. The question-mark kicking game was plenty sound and productive. Coach Chris Petersen and Kellen Moore were almost surgical as they moved the ball against the Bulldogs. If it sounds like I am high on Boise State that’s because I am. IF they played in the Pac-12 this year, although I believe someone would beat them, they would win the conference. That’s right I said they would win the conference.
Georgia on the other hand has a lot more work to do but there is definitely reason for hope. True frosh running back Isaiah Crowell is definitely a player with outstanding upside. For a true freshman he competed well and showed flashes of real promise. QB Aaron Murray is very talented but needs more weapons around him. Tight End Orson Charles may be the best one in the country and Aron White another TE can be a factor, but for the most part Georgia does not have another player who really scares you – EXCEPT a guy named Brandon Boykin. Now that guy, he puts the fear in you if you’re an opposing defensive coordinator. Problem is he plays defensive back. After seeing his one offensive touch go for 80 yards and a TD on Saturday, somehow the Bulldogs have to figure a way to get that guy the ball 10-15 times a game. He is a real threat!!! Most disappointing thing of the night for Georgia was the mass departure of a large part of their fan base EARLY into the fourth quarter with Georgia down by only 14 points. Didn’t any of you folks who left early watch the TCU/Baylor game?? Your Dawgs were only down by 14 points and you have a QB who threw for over 3000 yards last year – way too early to go to the parking lot and start complaining about the coaching staff.
Next week, Arizona State vs. Missouri. Should be lots of fun Friday night in Tempe.
