Dan Fouts
Q: Darrell (San Diego, CA) – Why do you think Philip Rivers is throwing so many interceptions this year? Is he still hurt from the vicious hit he took in the chest several weeks ago in New England, or is there some other reason?
A: I think head coach Norv Turner said it best when he remarked that Rivers is trying to do too much and is pressing. The foot injury to Antonio Gates has affected the Chargers the most, because he is the hub of the passing game. When healthy, he gets the attention of the opponent’s secondary and allows Malcom Floyd and Vincent Jackson to run free against single coverage. That opens up the whole field to Rivers and the Chargers offense. Without Gates, Rivers has forced too many balls into double coverage.
