TAMPA, FL – In a tense, tight battle between two defensive-minded teams, it was an unlikely bounce of a loose puck which proved to be the difference.
Ferris State’s Kyle Bonis broke a 1-1 deadlock with a putback of a rebound past Union College goaltender Troy Grosenick, and the Bulldogs would then deposit an empty-netter in the final minute of regulation to earn the hard-fought, 3-1 victory. The Bulldogs will meet top-ranked Boston College for the national championship on Saturday night.
Ferris State first got on the board when Aaron Schmit lit the lamp in the second period, wiping out a 1-0 Union College lead, obtained by the Dutchmen when Daniel Carr scored earlier in the period. Schmit scored his second goal of the night on the empty-net tally.
Sean Grande and Cap Raeder called the action on the Westwood One Radio Network.
