U.S. Open Reaction: Webb Simpson Wins!

06/18/2012

SAN FRANCISCO — Webb Simpson fired his second-straight 68 and then waited anxiously as third-round leaders Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk faltered down the stretch. In the end, Simpson won the 2012 U.S. Open – his first major championship – after finishing at one-over par for the tournament.

McDowell had a 25-foot birdie putt at 18 that would’ve forced an 18-hold playoff on Monday, but it missed left and McDowell finished a shot back in a tie for second place with Michael Thompson. Thompson, who led after the first round, recovered to shoot a final-round 67.

Furyk finished a farther shot back after a bogey at 18. Tiger Woods shot a 73 and finished in a tie for 21st at +7.
