Judo: Kayla Harrison wins first-ever U.S. gold in judo

LONDON – The U.S. has won a whole lot of Olympic gold medals over the years, but until Thursday, the Americans had never captured one in the sport of judo, which men have contested at the Olympics since 1964 in Tokyo.

Women joined the competition in 1992, yet still no golds came. That record is now a thing of the past, thanks to 22-year-old Kayla Harrison, who won the 78-kg competition with a victory over Great Britain’s Gemma Gibbons.

After her victory, she spoke with our Joe Tolleson.
