ARDMORE, PA – Justin Rose fired an even-par 70 into win his first U.S. Open, finishing at one-over for the Championship to best Phil Mickelson and Jason Day by two shots.
Rose began the day two shots back of Mickelson, but was the only player in the final ten groups of the day to shoot par or better. Mickelson’s day was derailed by a pair of double bogeys and yet another second-place U.S. Open finish was confirmed when he failed to hole out from the fairway for birdie at 18. Mickelson would bogey the hole and finish with a final round score of 74. The second-place finish is the sixth of his career at the Open.
Rose is the first Englishman to win the U.S. Open since Tony Jacklin won at Hazeltine in 1970 and the first English major winner since Nick Faldo’s triumph at the 1996 Masters.
31-year-old American Shawn Stefani finished in a tie for 59th, but made history at the 17th hole when he became the first player to ever card a hole in one during a U.S. Open played at Merion Golf Club., which hosted for the fifth time in its history this weekend.
