Tailgate Tradition: The Red River Rivalry

10/11/2013

College Football Country Tailgate TraditionEvery week on College Football Country, we take you around the nation to find out more about one of the things that makes Saturdays so great: tailgating.

The Texas-Oklahoma game, which can be heard at 11:30 AM Eastern Saturday right here on WestwoodOneSports.com, is one of the longest standing series in college football, and this year celebrates the 108th meeting between these two bitter rivals.

The series began in 1900 and has developed into the one of the most anticipated and heated games of the season. The Red River Rivalry has been held in Dallas at a neutral site since 1929 and this year marks the 76th time the Cotton Bowl will serve as the game site. Since Dallas is halfway between Austin and Norman, it is the perfect location for both school’s fans to travel. No matter their rank or record going in to this game, both opponents put everything on the line in hope of taking home the Golden Hat. There is a heightened level of energy that can be felt around the stadium and a sense of electricity in the air as every down is played.

Dallas transforms into a city evenly split between fans in red and those in burnt orange and it will be hard not to stumble upon a college football-themed party at some point over the weekend.  This is more than a tailgate, this is an entire weekend of happy hours, get togethers and some good old fashioned competition!

For those with tickets to the game, tailgating is intermingled with the fun of the Texas State Fair, which is also taking place this month. You can imagine the huge crowd that is drawn to the fair and the great tailgating experience the fair creates! There certainly isn’t a lack of food options, that’s for sure! The Texas State Fair is known for frying just about everything, including pickles, Oreos, chicken fried bacon and even fried butter – yes, they fry butter in Texas!

So, if you’re in Dallas this weekend, pick your team color and join in on all the UT-OU party and tailgate festivities. After all, it is Texas, so go big or go home!
