PINEHURST, NC – Prior to the start of the U.S. Open golf championship on Thursday, Martin Kaymer quipped that he would shoot 8-over par on the challenging course at Pinehurst Country Club. He opened the tournament, however, with a 5-under-par round 65 that placed him three shots below his nearest challengers – Kevin Na, Graeme McDowell and Brendon de Jonge, each of whom finished at 68.
The 29-year old owns two victories on the PGA Tour, the 2010 PGA Championship and this year’s Players Championship. He’ll continue his search for a third title when U.S. Open play continues Friday morning.
