This Week in the NCAA: Loyola volleyball goes back-to-back

05/15/2015

For the second straight year, the Ramblers of Loyola University in Chicago are the champions of NCAA men’s volleyball.

A year ago, Loyola became the first team from the Central time zone to claim the title – and they did it in front of a partisan home crowd as hosts of the championship match. This year, the Ramblers’ epic, five-set win over Lewis University from suburban Chicago came several thousands of miles away on Stanford’s campus. The match marked the first time two teams from east of the Rockies met for the championship as volleyball has long been dominated by West Coast schools.

Speaking of Stanford, the Cardinal’s women’s water polo team captured the NCAA title for the fourth time in five years over the weekend. Kiley Neushul scored on a penalty shot with just 11 seconds left in the game to lead Stanford to a 7-6 win over UCLA.
