OMAHA, NE – Vanderbilt only managed three hits all night – but one big one was all they needed – as the Commodores defeated TCU 1-0 to get within a single victory of a return to the championship series for a second year in a row.
Zander Wiel’s seventh-inning solo home run was Vanderbilt’s first hit of the night and gave them the only tally they needed on a night when Philip Pfeifer and Kyle Wright combined for a five-hit shutout. Pfeifer struck out 7 in seven innings, while Wright fanned four more over the final two frames.
Vanderbilt will play for a bracket championship on Friday against the winner of Thursday night’s elimination game, either TCU or LSU.
Kevin Kugler and John Bishop called the action from TD Ameritrade Park.
