ST. ANDREWS, SCOTLAND – Yet another long weather delay, this time gale-force winds that left the Old Course unplayable, wasn’t enough to slow down Dustin Johnson at the British Open.
The American was at -10 for the championship before darkness halted play Friday when he was through 13 holes of his second round. He got up bright and early Saturday, but was only able to complete two holes before winds suspended play again.
After a delay that spanned most of the day, Johnson and the rest of the field returned to the course to finally finish the second round – some 37 hours after it started on Friday morning.
England’s Danny Willett had already finished Friday before darkness fell, so he watched Saturday and is one shot off the lead.
Masters and U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth shot an even-par 72 for the round and is five-under for the championship.
Because of the lengthy delays, the third round will be played on Sunday with the final round taking place Monday.
