SAN JOSE, CA – Gonzaga played tenacious defense in the final 38 seconds, while clinging to a three-point lead, to hold off fourth-seeded West Virginia 61-58 and advance to the Elite Eight for the second time in three years.
Przemek Karnowski, Johnathan Williams, and Jordan Mathews contributed 13 points apiece for the top-seeded Bulldogs. Mathews hit a tough three-pointer with 50 seconds to play to put the Zags ahead for good.
Junior guard Jevon Carter led the Mountaineers with 21 points but ultimately was unable to connect on either of his two game-tying three-point attempts in the closing seconds.
