Bill Frieder

Bill Frieder is one of the lead analysts on Westwood One’s coverage of NCAA Basketball. After winning two straight state championships at Flint Northern High School in Flint, Michigan, Bill returned to his alma mater in 1973. Frieder became the head coach at Michigan in 1980 and led the Wolverines to a 191-87 record during his tenure (1980-1989). After winning Michigan’s first ever NIT championship in 1984, the Wolverines won 33 consecutive regular season games on the way to two straight Big Ten championships in 1985 and 1986. For that he was named Coach of the Year by both the Associated Press and Basketball Weekly.

Frieder ended his coaching career at Arizona State (1989 -1997). In 1995, he led the Sun Devils to their only Sweet 16 appearance of the last 40 years.

It was a big thrill doing the Kentucky-Kansas game last weekend and it was only fitting the game went into overtime because no one wanted it to end. All the history and tradition is beyond belief and includes Dr. James Naismith, Phog Allen and Adolph Rupp…yes, Adolph Rupp. He played…
