The best weekend of the YEAR in college football came last weekend: Rivalry Weekend. No other weekend is as competitive or as exciting.
Starting early in the morning on the West Coast and ending around 11pm that night, you get the very best of the college game. I started with Michigan-Ohio State at 9 in the morning and finished that night with UCLA-USC. In between, I saw parts or the entirety of at least 10-15 other great, exciting college games.
This year, some athletic directors played rivalry games before Rivalry Weekend. Then, on Rivalry Weekend, they played some other opponent. What are those AD’s thinking?? What a huge mistake. They missed the best weekend of the year to brand their best game of the year. It’s Marketing 101.
Tigers vs. Dawgs
This week, the enjoyment continues with the championship games. I’m going to Atlanta for Westwood One’s coverage of the SEC Championship between LSU and Georgia. The Bulldogs are the most-improved team in the SEC – in either division. They’ve grown leaps and bounds from the team I saw in their opening game loss to Boise State at the Georgia Dome. The coaching staff and players have done a great job of improving over the course of the year, believing in themselves and performing at a high level to get back to the Georgia Dome for a second time this season. The Bulldogs have the 3rd-best defense in the league, and it’s a better defense than people think. Offensively, they have a QB and some play-makers that might make it interesting. But at the end of the day, it’s that LSU defense and the play of Jefferson at QB that I think will prevail. The atmosphere will be fantastic and once again showcase the best in football – College Football. Can’t wait.
