GREENSBORO, N.C. – A controversial ending benefited 8-seed Creighton and ended the season for 9-seed Alabama. The Bluejays (29-5) beat the Crimson Tide (21-12) in dramatic fashion 58-57 in their Midwest Regional 2nd round game.
Trailing by one point with one second remaining in regulation, Alabama’s Trevor Relaford appeared to be fouled by Creighton’s Josh Jones while attempting a potential game-winning shot. Jones was credited with a clean block, no foul was called, Relaford’s shot was no good, and the Tide’s hopes for a buzzer-beating win were dashed.
Creighton was led by Doug McDermott’s 16 points. The win was the Bluejays’ first NCAA Tournament victory since 2002. They advance to face the winner of North Carolina – Vermont on Sunday in a 3rd round game.
Trevor Relaford finished with 14 points to pace Alabama.
Gary Cohen and Reid Gettys called the action on the Westwood One Radio Network.
