ATLANTA, GA – Don’t look now, but Baylor University just may be taking over college sports.
Already boasting the reigning Heisman Trophy Winner and the #1 women’s basketball team in the nation, the men’s basketball team is now one victory away from the Final Four, after a 75-70 victory over Xavier in the South Regional semifinal. Baylor advances to their second Elite Eight in the last three seasons.
The Bears raced out to a 22-4 lead against a shellshocked Musketeers squad to open the game. Though Xavier fought back to cut the deficit to as few as four in the second half (46-42), they could never get over the hump against a Baylor team delivering outstanding interior and perimeter play.
Bear forwards Quincy Acy and Perry Jones III combined for 34 points and 20 rebounds, while guard Pierre Jackson scored 16 points and dished out 10 assists. Xavier’s Tu Holloway scored a game-high 22 points.
Ian Eagle and John Thompson called the action on the Westwood One Radio Network.
