OMAHA — The Cinderella story of the Stony Brook Seawolves got a healthy dose of reality in Game 1 of the 2012 College World Series, as UCLA struck for five runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 9-1 win.
Jeff Gelalich, Pat Valaika and Kevin Williams each drove in a pair of the runs for the Bruins, who also got a solid start from Adam Plutko. Plutko scattered five hits over seven innings, striking out seven and allowing just a single run in earning the victory.
UCLA moves into the winner’s bracket and will play Arizona on Sunday evening. Stony Brook faces Florida State Sunday afternoon in an elimination game.
Kevin Kugler and John Bishop called the action.
