James Lofton

Q: Rob L. (Mt. Pleasant, PA) – How long does it take for a receiver to work well with a quarterback?

A: If you catch the first ball you’re thrown, you’ve got a head start. I had played 11 years and made seven Pro Bowls, but was waived by the LA Raiders at the end of training camp in 1989. I was picked up in Week 3 by the Buffalo Bills and I was a starter by Week 6, but it really took until the next training camp before Jim Kelly had full trust in me. QBs and WRs now have extended off-season programs when they can work a lot together, but there is nothing like game experience to see if the connection is real.
