Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska has got to be one of the very best venues in the country for having a great time at a football game.
Last weekend, Westwood One was on hand to broadcast the Wisconsin-Nebraska game and it was a blast! Never mind who won the game. That’s not important here. From the Friday night dinner all the way through to the postgame wrap-up, I was blown away by the Husker fans.
Don’t get me wrong, there are several great places and fan bases in college football, but can any place really claim to be better than this?? These guys have more consecutive sellouts than most schools have victories! Five national titles, 43 conference championships – and about to win another, if you ask me – 48 bowl games, and more wins than any team in the country since 1970.
When I was coaching at UCLA, I hated the Nebraska fans. Now I love ’em! I thought they were the worst, now I think they’re the best. What in the heck is going on here? I was so impressed that if they didn’t have that pesky thing called winter, I would move there and become a fan of Big Red! Don’t adjust your internet connection. You read that right!
Any of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, you will when the Nebraska fans take over the Rose Bowl in January. Trust me, their football team will be there and so will thousands and thousands of their fans! You’ll see.
