Second Round Highlights: (15) Florida Gulf Coast 78 – (2) Georgetown 68

03/23/2013

Eddie Murray dunk_Florida Gulf Coast_2PHILADELPHIA, PA – Demonstrating that their early-season victory over Miami (FL) was no fluke, fifteenth-seeded Florida Gulf Coast knocked-off second-seeded Georgetown 78-68 in a South Region contest.  It was the biggest upset of the Second Round.

The champions of the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament were unfazed by the highly favored Hoyas, pushing a frenetic tempo from the opening tip, and then later going on a 21-2 second-half run to seize control of the game.

Sherwood Brown and Bernard Thompson led the charge for the Eagles, playing nearly the entire game, each shot 3-of-6 from behind the arc, and they finished with 24 and 23 points, respectively.

Markel Starks carried the beleaguered Hoyas with 23 points and six assists, but it was not enough, as Georgetown struggled to keep up with FGCU’s intensity and athleticism.

With the huge win, Florida Gulf Coast advances to the Third Round, where they will take on the winner of Oklahoma-San Diego State on Sunday.

Scott Graham and John Thompson called the action on Westwood One Sports.
