KANSAS CITY, MO – UNC saw a big lead disappear but hung on in a clash of pedigree programs to defeat Villanova 78-71, sending them into the third round and a possible classic matchup against top-seeded Kansas. PJ Hairston scored 23 points for the eighth-seeded Tar Heels while James Michael McAdoo chipped in 17. The win was Roy Williams’ 700th career victory as a coach.
JayVaughn Pinkston and Darrun Hilliard scored 20 and 18 points respectively for the Wildcats, who erased a 20-point lead and nearly pulled out a win before a barrage of late threes put UNC ahead for good.
Kevin Calabro and Will Perdue called the action on Westwood One Sports.
