SPOKANE, WA – Adreian Payne put on a one-man show in Michigan State’s first game of the tournament, scoring 41 points in the Spartans’ 93-78 victory against Delaware. Payne set an NCAA tournament record by making 17 out of 17 from the free throw line, and his 41 points set a new Michigan State tournament record as well.
Devon Saddler and Davon Usher put up 21 and 20 points, respectively, in the loss for Delaware. The 13th-seeded Blue Hens managed to hang with the fourth-seeded Spartans until 17 straight points by Payne put Michigan State up by 18 midway through the first half. The win sets up a Saturday game against Harvard, who upset Cincinnati earlier in the day.
