OMAHA, NE – For the first time in school history, the Virginia Cavaliers are the champions of college baseball after defeating Vanderbilt 4-2 in the deciding game at the 2015 College World Series.
Brandon Waddell gave up a pair of runs early, but that was all the Commodores could manage on the night. Waddell threw seven innings and allowed just four hits. Nathan Kirby entered in relief and added two more scoreless innings as Virginia became the first team out of the ACC to win the national championship since Wake Forest did it 60 years ago.
Pavin Smith was the star at the plate, driving in three of Virginia’s four runs on the night – including a pair on a two-run game-tying home run in the fourth inning. He’d add a go-ahead RBI an inning later.
Kevin Kugler and Scott Graham called the action from TD Ameritrade Park.
