CWS Update: Texas wins late night affair; Vandy advances after win

06/26/2021

OMAHA, NE – Texas won a back-and-forth affair that lasted late into the night on Friday at the College World Series, defeating Mississippi State 8-5 to set up a winner-take-all finale for a spot in the championship series.

The Bulldogs rallied to tie that game at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth, before a three-run Longhorn home run in the top of the 9th restored the lead. Then the rains came, forcing a nearly three-hour delay before the game could be concluded.

The teams will meet again on Saturday night for the right to place Vanderbilt in the best-of-three finals. The Commodores beat a half-strength NC State team 3-1 earlier on Friday to force a winner-take-all game on that side of the bracket, however late Friday night NC State was ruled out by the NCAA and the game, which would’ve taken place Saturday afternoon was declared “a no-contest because of COVID-19 protocols.”
