Saint Peter’s Becomes Third 15 Seed Ever to Make Sweet 16

03/20/2022

The Saint Peter’s Peacocks defeated a second team from Kentucky, outlasting Murray State 70-60 to match Florida Gulf Coast (2013) and Oral Roberts (2021) as the only 15th-seeded teams to ever make the round of 16.

The day started with the defeat of the defending champion and No. 1-seed Baylor Bears, as the 8th-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels beat them 93-86 in overtime. The Tar Heels led by 25 with ten minutes left in the game before Baylor mounted a comeback for the ages to tie it up and send it to the extra period but couldn’t pull out the win.

The Michigan Wolverines came back late to pull an upset of their own, knocking off the #3-seeded Tennessee Volunteers 76-68. Hunter Dickinson had 27 points for the victors to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

The top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs made their seventh straight Sweet 16, with Drew Timme scoring 21 of his 25 points in the second half as the defending-runner ups rallied to overcome Memphis 82-78.

Kansas avoided Baylor’s fate by dispatching a pesky Creighton Bluejays team 79-72 to advance to the Sweet 16 thanks to some late defensive stands.

Arkansas and New Mexico State were locked in a low-scoring battle, but the Razorbacks gritted out a win over the Aggies 53-48 despite shooting just 27.5 percent from the floor.

The fourth-seeded UCLA Bruins used a late 15-4 run to continue the quest for back-to-back Final Fours with a 72-56 win over fifth-seeded St. Mary’s.

The fourth-seeded Providence Friars cruised to a 79-51 win over 12 seed Richmond, limiting the Spiders to a 1 for 22 performance from deep.
