Day 1 Recap: Hectic start to 2025 March Madness

The first round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament featured 16 eventful basketball games across the country.


9-seed Creighton got the Madness started with a rout of 8-seed Louisville, winning 89-75 in Lexington.


4-seed Purdue survived an early scare from 13-seed High Point, beating the Panthers 75-63 in Providence.


3-seed Wisconsin was never really challenged in an 85-66 win over 14-seed Montana in Denver.


1-seed Houston nearly doubled up SIU Edwardsville in the day’s largest blowout win, 78-40 in Wichita.


Overall No. 1 Auburn followed the footsteps of Houston, blowing out First Four darling Alabama State 83-63 in Lexington.


12-seed McNeese became the cinderella of Day 1, upsetting 5-seed Clemson in a 69-67 thriller in Providence, despite the 18-point Cowboy lead at halftime.


6-seed BYU took care of business against 11-seed VCU, winning 80-71 in Denver.


8-seed Gonzaga looked like the vintage Bulldogs that have come to dominate in March, beating 9-seed Georgia 89-68 in Wichita.


2-seed Tennessee had its way with Wofford, beating the 15-seed by 15 in a 77-62 rout in Lexington.


John Calipari’s Arkansas became the first 10-seed to win in this year’s tournament, beating 7-seed Kansas 79-72 in Providence.


4-seed Texas A&M took care of business against 13-seed Yale, beating the Bulldogs 80-71 in Denver.


11-seed Drake completed the second-biggest update of the day, beating 6-seed Missouri 67-57 in Wichita.


In its first year in the Big Ten, 7-seed UCLA blew out 10-seed Utah State 72-47 in Lexington.


2-seed St. John’s survived a first-half scare from Omaha, turning on the jets in the second half to beat the 15-seed 83-53 in Providence.


5-seed Michigan hangs on as 12-seed UC San Diego nearly overcomes a double-digit deficit in late thriller. The Wolverines win 68-65 in Denver.


3-seed Texas Tech ended the night with a tightly contested battle against 14-seed UNC Wilmington, beating the Seahawks 82-72 in Wichita.
