ARDMORE, PA – Rain was the big story on Thursday at Merion Golf Club, with two long delays keeping half the field from finishing their opening rounds. Only those that went out in the morning were able to complete the first round, with Phil Mickelson putting up the best round.
Lefty carded a three-under 67, despite a coast-to-coast trip to see his daughter’s graduation on Wednesday night.
Luke Donald is the overall leader heading into Friday’s action. Donald made birdie at the 13th hole to get to -4 just before play was suspended due to darkness.
Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts was the only other player to finish a round and be under par. He shot a 69.
In addition to Donald, notable players near the top of the leader board when play was halted Thursday include Adam Scott (-3 through 11), defending champion Webb Simpson (-2 through 8) and Lee Westwood, who held a share of the lead with Mickelson for a time before a double-bogey at 12. Westwood is -1 through 13 holes.
Rory McIlroy is even through 11 and Tiger Woods will have a par-saving putt left at the 11th when play resumes Friday to remain +2.
