UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA – Jordan Spieth is halfway to golf’s grand slam, winning the U.S. Open Sunday when Dustin Johnson three-putted from 12 feet at the 18th hole to give Spieth a one-shot victory.
Spieth looked to have fallen off the pace with a double-bogey on the 17th to surrender a two-shot lead and end up in a dead heat with Louis Oosthuizen – who was in the clubhouse at four-under par – and Dustin Johnson, who was playing in the final group behind Spieth.
But Spieth rallied with a birdie at the 18th, leaving Johnson in need of at least a birdie to force an 18-hole playoff on Monday. He nearly did one better. Johnson’s five-iron into the 18th landed 12 feet high of the hole, giving him an eagle putt on the par five to win the championship outright. Johnson rolled that putt several feet past the hole, then missed the comeback putt to hand Spieth his second consecutive major victory. He’ll go for the third leg at the Open Championship on the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland next month.
