Tony’s Take: Frustrated with the BCS

12/08/2011

Typically I always keep my topics to the NFL, but in light of the BCS Championship Game being announced and how it turned out, I can’t help myself. I have to give my thoughts on just how ridiculous the BCS is, the injustice done to Oklahoma State and why the BCS once again reminds me why the NFL is king when it comes to football.

First the absurdity of the BCS. How in the world is it allowed for a championship in any sport, other than gymnastics or figure skating, to be decided by people voting and a bunch of computer nerds writing programs in the basement of their parents’ home? I am amazed year after year that we sit back and let coaches who have a vested interested in who plays in the championship game (money for themselves and their schools) vote for who they think is the best team. Are you telling me that they watch all the games of the top 20 teams? NO WAY! How do you think Nick Saban voted this past week? Did he really vote for who he thought were the best teams or did he vote in a manner that would give Alabama the best chance to play in the BCS Championship?

And these polls only make up a portion of the BCS. The rest is determined by the computers. What a great idea! Let’s get a bunch of computer programmers and have them help determine which teams play in the biggest college football game every year. What happened to deciding a championship on the field like every other sport in the NCAA? This seems especially important in football, where how teams match up with each other plays such a significant factor in the outcome of a game.

This is why I love the NFL. It isn’t left to the opinion of the press, coaches or computers. The champion is decided on the field, so you get classic games and great upsets like the Giants-Patriots Super Bowl. My guess is that at the beginning of the playoffs that year, you couldn’t have found a member of the media, a coach or even devised a computer program that would have given the Giants the chance to play in that game. But they earned the right on the field to play for a championship and we were rewarded with a great game and a real champion. Imagine if we could say the same at the end of every college football season?
