COLUMBUS, OH – A team some thought might not make the NCAA Tournament field has claimed its first victim. 11-seed North Carolina State rode 22 points from Richard Howell en route to a 79-65 upset over 6-seed San Diego State in their 2nd round Midwest Regional matchup.
The Wolfpack (23-12) – once precariously balanced on the proverbial bubble after four straight losses in February – advance to the 3rd round to face the winner of Belmont and Georgetown on Sunday.
San Diego State (26-8) was led by Jamal Franklin who poured in 23 points in a losing cause.
Wayne Larrivee and John Thompson called the action on the Westwood One Radio Network.
