LONDON – What a night it was for Team USA at the London 2012 Olympic Games. First, the women’s gymnastics team blew away the competition to capture gold, then Michael Phelps became the most decorated athlete in Olympics history by winning his 19th medal.
The gold the U.S. 4×200 freestyle relay team captured was Phelps’ second prize of the night, after he was just beat to the finish line and had to settle for the silver in the 200-meter butterfly.
Phelps’ 19 medals – including 15 golds – surpass Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who won 18 medals in the 1950s and ’60s. And Phelps has a chance to set the bar even higher – he has a shot at three more medals before the swimming competition is done at this year’s Games.
