AUBURN HILLS, MI – Arguably the most explosive offensive team in the nation, Michigan could simply do no wrong before a Maize-and-Blue clad crowd at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
Freshman Mitch McGary paced a balanced offensive attack with career-highs of 21 points and 14 rebounds, as the Wolverines steamrolled VCU by a final of 78-53 to become the first team to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Trey Burke added 18 points and seven assists, while Tim Hardaway, Jr. and Glenn Robinson III each added 14. Juvonte Reddic led VCU with 16 points.
The Wolverines advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1994. The school’s lone national title came in 1989.
Tom McCarthy and Kelly Tripucka called the action on Westwood One Sports.
