DENVER, CO – It seems inconceivable that a team could reach five consecutive Final Fours, and yet somehow go relatively unappreciated.
But that seems to be the case for Tara VanDerveeer’s Stanford Cardinal, for the simple fact that none of their previous Final Four appearances have resulted in the ultimate prize – a national championship.
VanDerveer won it all at Stanford in 1990 and 1992, but the era of dominance established since that time by both Connecticut and Tennessee have kept the Cardinal outside the winner’s circle. Though Tennessee is long gone and a potential matchup with UConn wouldn’t take place until the finals, a daunting foe stands in the Cardinal’s way nonetheless – 38-0 Baylor, led by 6’8″ AP Player of the Year Brittney Griner.
Krista Blunk caught up with Coach VanDerveer ahead of the game.
