SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The most controversial selection as a #1 seed did nothing to silence their critics, as Gonzaga survived an upset bid from 16th-seeded Southern by a 64-58 final.
Kelly Olynyk posted a double-double with game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Derick Beltran paced Southern with 21 points, to match Olynyk’s effort. The Bulldogs were never able to shake their upstart foes until the final half-minute, as the Jaguars fell just short in their bid to become the first #16 seed to ever upset a top-seeded team.
Dave Sims and Kevin Grevey called the action on Westwood One Sports.
