ANAHEIM, CA – For the first time in program history, the Mustangs of Cal Poly are headed to the big dance.
Cal Poly defeated Cal State Northridge 61-59 thanks to Ridge Shipley’s go-ahead three-pointer with 13.7 seconds remaining in Saturday night’s Big West championship game.
Shipley had 14 points in the victory. The Mustangs were paced by Chris Eversley, who had 18 points. Shipley, Eversley and forward Dave Nwaba accounted for 49 of Cal Poly’s 61 points on the night.
The Mustangs finished the season with just a 13-19 record and were seeded seventh in the tournament. They had to beat both the #1 and #2 seeds to become the lowest seed to ever capture the Big West in the tournament’s 39-year history.
Wayne Larrivee and Marques Johnson called the action on WestwoodOne Sports.
