Chelsea received the Barclays Premier League trophy after completing the season with a 3-1 win over Sunderland, but the drama on Championship Sunday played out elsewhere.
In Newcastle, a pair of second-half goals were enough to ensure the Magpies avoided relegation thanks to a 2-0 win over West Ham. That result consigned Steve Bruce’s Hull City to the second division next season along with previously relegated QPR and Burnley. Hull drew nil-nil with 10-man Manchester United, which had Marouane Fellaini sent off for a wild challenge, but needed a win and a Newcastle draw or loss to stay up. United finished fourth in the table and will enter the Champions League playoffs in August.
Elsewhere, Arsenal confirmed a third-place finish thanks to Theo Walcott’s hat trick and a Jack Wilshere screamer in a 4-1 win over West Brom. Manchester City finished a second-place campaign with a 2-0 win over Southampton. The Saints ended up seventh and will earn a Europa League spot if Arsenal beats Aston Villa in next Saturday’s FA Cup final. The other Europa League spots went to Tottenham, a 1-0 winner over Everton on the final day, and Liverpool. Reds legend Steven Gerrard signed off with a goal in his final appearance for the club, but it was the lone bright spot as Liverpool slumped to a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Stoke.
Tom Rennie hosts a look back at all the best action from the final Sunday of the 2014-15 Barclays Premier League season.
