Despite leading by as many as 18 points in the second half, Purdue needed overtime to get past Tennessee, 99-94, to advance to the Sweet 16 on Thursday night in Louisville. Meanwhile, top-seed Virginia battled with Oregon to move on to the Elite 8, 53-49, after a superb defensive effort.
Leading 65-51 with less than 11 minutes to play, Purdue appeared as if it would coast into the Elite 8, but a 14-0 Tennessee run foiled that plan and set up quite the finish in Louisville.
Later in the night in Louisville, top-seed Virginia was in danger of being upset by 12-seed Oregon in a game dominated by defense, but some clutch three pointers late pushed the Cavaliers to a 53-49 victory.
In other action, top-seed Gonzaga handled a late Florida State push to advance to the Elite 8 with a 72-58 win in Anaheim.
And in perhaps the most dominant effort of the night, Texas Tech blew out Michigan, 63-44, after only 40 combined points were scored in the first half in Anaheim.
