With Texas 1-2 and struggling heading into the game, all eyes are on Longhorns head coach Mack Brown. With that in mind, we asked our analyst Tim Brown, who will call the game, to give us the lowdown on Texas.
I had a chance to cover Texas for The Longhorn Network a few years ago, and I had a pretty frank conversation with Mack Brown about the number of freshman seeing significant time for Texas. I couldn’t figure out why the University of Texas was playing so many underclassmen and basically what they told me is they missed on some folks and some guys didn’t pan out. It was really mind-blowing to me because when you look at the University of Texas, that’s not supposed to happen. You’re supposed to have the pick of the litter.
Mack Brown has referred to himself as the being the mayor of the University of Texas, not the head coach, which means he has a lot of responsibilities. He spends a lot of time at banquets and kissing babies. Stuff like that. He told me he didn’t even see any of the new recruits until they got down to the final 30. I think they need to limit Brown’s mayoral duties and let him be a full-time football coach. Right now, kissing babies is not helping the football team. I think Mack Brown is still a quality coach and can still get it done.
