Few teams have ever been more larger-than-life than the 1983 Houston Cougars. Led by Akeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler, Houston was worthy of its Phi Slama Jama nickname – and 31-2 heading into the championship game.
So when Jim Valvano was getting his North Carolina State team set to face the mighty Cougars, few predicted the eventual outcome – a last-second Wolfpack win that set off one of the great celebrations in NCAA Tournament history, as Valvano rushed around the court, looking for someone to hug.
