LINCOLN, NE – Filling in for injured starting quarterback Taysom Hill, Tanner Mangum connected on 42-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Mathews as time expired to give BYU a shocking 33-28 win over Nebraska.
The Huskers led thanks to 14 unanswered points in the third quarter, but couldn’t hold on at the very end after Hill left with what is expected to be a season-ending injury.
Mangum stepped in and led the Cougars 76 yards in seven plays for a shocking ending in front of a stunned crowd at Memorial Stadium. The loss marked Nebraska’s first opening-game defeat since 1985, stopping the nation’s longest streak at 29 straight.
Chuck Cooperstein and Derek Rackley called the action on Westwood One Sports.
