SAN DIEGO – The Houston Texans rallied from a 21-point deficit to defeat the San Diego Chargers 31-28 on a game-winning field goal as time expired.
The Chargers had led 28-7 midway through the third quarter thanks to four Philip Rivers touchdown passes, but Matt Schaub drove the Texans down the field for a pair of scores before Brian Cushing made the play of the night. With 9:30 remaining in the fourth quarter, Cushing dove to intercept a Rivers pass then popped up off the ground and rumbled 18 yards for a game-tying touchdown.
Randy Bullock’s first career field goal was a big one as he sailed a 41-yarder through the uprights to give Houston a season-opening victory.
Kevin Harlan and Dan Fouts called the action on WestwoodOne Sports.
