James Lofton on Peyton, the Patriots and more

10/07/2014

Out and Up James Lofton NewEach week, Hall of Fame wide receiver and Westwood One Sunday Night Football analyst James Lofton tells you about the teams, players and trends that are on the way out and those that are on the way up around the NFL.

UP! All things Patriot… Hoodies, Brady gets past 50,000 yards, Gronk’s back, the defense is firing. Boy, things can change a lot in the span of six days, can’t they? Or did they just revert to normal?

OUT, UP AND BACK IN: Out, Geno Smith. Up under center, Michael Vick. Back in, Geno Smith. At 1-4, this Jet plane is going nowhere. Might as well let this trip run its course and see if the next captain of the ship has a quarterback to work with.

OUT: The Jags let the cat out of the bag. Next time take his magic marker away. There is no thin line between funny and not even close to funny. Deadly diseases are no joke.

UP! Rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham and his Mohawk. First the Giants gave us Victor Cruz and his salsa dance, now this. Let’s hope the rookie’s hamstring holds up and this new fashion trend will take off. Now if I could just grow some hair…

IN: Leasing, not buying – if you’re named Raiders head coach. Seven head coaches have come and gone since Jon Gruden ruled the sidelines of the East Bay. Turns out seven is actually a lucky number, for realtors in the Bay Area.

UP! Into rarefied air in the Mile High City. Peyton Manning joined Brett Favre in the 500 club and is just six TD tosses shy of eclipsing Brett for the all-time mark. As long Manning doesn’t eye Favre’s other record, he’s in great shape. Brett’s holding strong there, however. With just 222 interceptions to Favre’s 336, Manning would have to play until he’s 50 to match that one.
